A Belt for Him: How to Pick the Right Leather Belt as a Gift

· Trevor Wing

A belt is one of the easier gifts to get right, as long as you get three things right: the size, the color and the buckle. This guide walks through each one so you can choose a belt for him with confidence, even if you can't check what he already wears.

Step 1: Get the size right (this is the hard part)

Belts are sized differently from pants, and the number on his pants is not the belt size. A belt is usually about 2 inches larger than the pant size, so a man who wears size 34 pants typically wears a size 36 belt. On our belts, each size is labeled both ways, for example "36 fits 34 pants," so you don't have to do the math.

The most reliable way to find his size without asking is to measure a belt he already wears. Lay it flat and measure from the end of the leather (not the buckle) to the hole he uses most. Our guide on how to measure and pick the right belt size shows exactly how, and the belt size chart converts between pant size, inches and centimeters.

If you can't check his belt, look at the tag inside his pants and choose the belt size that fits that pant size. If he is between sizes, the usual advice is to go up, because a belt that is slightly long is easier to live with than one that is too short.

Step 2: Pick the color

  • Black is the safest choice for dress shoes, suits and a dark wardrobe. See our black leather belts.
  • Brown works with jeans, chinos and most casual shoes. Havana, British Brown and Chestnut are different shades of brown, from lighter to darker. See the brown leather belts.
  • London Tan is the lighter, warmer option for casual outfits and summer clothes. See London Tan belts.

If you only know one thing about his style, look at his shoes. A belt that is close to his shoe color almost always looks right. If he wears mostly black shoes, choose black. If he wears brown boots and sneakers, choose a brown.

Step 3: Choose the buckle

Our belts come in three buckle styles. The Cavalier has a heel bar dress buckle, a clean, slim look made for suits and dressier outfits. The Heritage has a heel bar buckle that works with both dress pants and jeans. The Foundry has a roller buckle, which is a good fit for jeans and work wear. If you are not sure, the dress casual belts are the easy all-rounder. You can also browse by use: dress belts or casual belts.

Each belt comes in brass, nickel or chrome finishes. A simple rule: match the finish to his watch or his existing belts. Silver tones suit most people, and brass suits brown leather well. More in our guide to belt buckles.

What we'd avoid when gifting

Custom sizes are cut to the measurement you give us, so they can't be returned. If you are guessing at his size, choose a standard size instead, because standard sizes can be exchanged.

What if it doesn't fit?

We handle this a lot with gifts. Exchanges are unlimited within 30 days, and we ship the new belt for free in the contiguous US. For orders placed between November 1 and December 24, 2026, returns and exchanges are open until January 31, 2027, so he has time after the holidays. See the full refund policy for the details.

About the belts

Our belts are cut from English bridle leather, a vegetable-tanned, full grain leather made for belts and saddlery. They are handcrafted in the USA in New Jersey. If you would like to know more about the leather, read what English bridle leather is.
