Tan Belt: How to Wear One and What to Match
ยท Trevor Wing
The short answer
A tan belt goes with tan or light brown shoes, jeans, chinos and white sneakers. It doesn't go with black shoes, and it's a casual belt, not a dress belt. Tan is also the color that shows leather's age the most, which is the part I like best.
The short version:
- Tan goes with tan or light brown shoes, jeans, chinos and white sneakers
- A dark brown belt with tan shoes looks mismatched
- It isn't for black shoes
- It's casual. For dress, black or dark brown
- Tan darkens with wear, and the change is easy to see
What a tan belt is
Tan is a light, warm brown, close to the natural color of the leather. Cognac is a warmer, redder brown. Light brown sits between them. The names overlap, and every maker draws the lines a little differently, so judge by the color in the photo and not by the word.
What to wear with a tan belt
The easy rule: a tan shoe wants a tan belt, not a dark chocolate one. Close is enough. It doesn't need to be an exact match.
- Tan or light brown shoes and boots: the natural pair.
- Jeans: tan works with blue, black and gray denim.
- Chinos and khakis: light on light is fine.
- White sneakers: tan with white is a classic casual pair.
What not to wear it with
Black shoes. A tan belt with black shoes looks like you grabbed the wrong one. For dress pants, a suit, or a shirt and tie, use black or dark brown, in a plain, smooth leather. I covered that in Men's Dress Belt: What to Look For.
How a tan belt ages
A lighter leather shows more. Sun, handling and the oils from your hands darken it, and the color deepens and shifts. That's patina, and it's slow aging, like whiskey. I'm a sucker for deep patina, so a tan belt is the one I enjoy watching change.
It also shows scuffs and dirt more than a dark belt does. A wipe with a damp, clean cloth now and then is most of the care. If it has been years and the leather looks dry, a simple conditioner or balm is the tool. What to check in the leather
The same things matter on any belt:
- A tannery you can look up. Full grain, top grain and genuine aren't grades.
- A solid strap. One piece of leather has no seam to fail.
- A brass buckle core. Brass first, then stainless, then anything else.
- Screws, not rivets. Chicago screws let you repair the belt later.
My tan is London Tan, one of five bridle leathers. See it on all belts.
